Mid-Century Modern With Margaret Howell : The Essentials
Classic Style ,Thoughtful Design
34 Wigmore Street, London
It’s always possible to tell when someone cares about what they are making. With Margaret Howell that doesn't just extend to the clothes she makes but every aspect of her stores. Her flagship store on Wigmore Street has the same calm of walking in to church, designed with William Russell, became the brand’s home in 2002. The whole space is warm and filled with light even on a cloudy day thanks to the cluster of skylights.
Howell is well known for her attention to detail and her simple classic designs crafted in the finest fabrics. Indeed Howell’s clothes are not cheap, but they are made to last. “I love the idea of making something that goes on for a long, long time, its about finding a lasting style, not a fashion thing, not a trend… they are thoughtful clothes”.
Today, as well as clothing, Margaret Howell’s brand offers a collection of curated accessories. Always looking out for objects that she thinks are well made and enduring in design and quality. So her stores are filled with Mid 20th Century products such as Anglepoise lamps, Ercol furniture and Robert Welch cutlery, representing the best of timeless functional design, a collection of pieces to live your life with.
London was where Howell moved to from the English countryside in the 60’s, she found inspiration in the culture, the creativity and particularly its architecture and galleries. “Its the life of the city the one really loves, and which makes its way in to ones’s work” she says. Perhaps it is that energy that makes Howell so popular not just here and in Europe, but especially in Japan. The element of contemporary simplicity and similar values of wanting something that lasts rather than just a trend, responds well with people, wherever they are.
